Terrace's Wade Balbirnie tops King of the Mountain Footrace

The annual King of the Mountain Footrace in Terrace is a definite challenge. It begins in front of the arena, north on Kalum, climbs up Skeenaview Drive and North Sparks to Halliwell, swing left, up Terrace Mountain, over the hiking trail to the Birch Bench, down Birch Hill to Park, and then back to the arena.

Think you're up to it? Think you could do it in less than 40 minutes? One did. Less than 50 minutes? Six did. The other 23 race entrants took 50 minutes or more, but that's not to say they had any less fun. Challenging . . . Yes. For some, though, simply beating the mountain, no matter the time, is what's important. For them, this race is personal challenge.

This year's race took place on Sunday, July 28. Leading the top six runners at the finish line was Wade Balbirnie of Terrace who completed the course in 39 minutes, 53 seconds. He was followed by Richard Harrison (40:15), Chris Cordts (47:11), Jesse Sheasby and Travis Yagelniski (49:45), and Willie Muller (49:55).
