On August 4, 1998, Nisga'a Chief Joseph Gosnell made history when he initialed the Nisga'a Treaty along with British Columbia Premier Glen Clark and federal Minister of Indian Affairs Jane Stewart. The ceremony, witnessed by more than 2,000 people in the Nisga'a village of New Aiyansh, made headlines around the world because the treaty is the first in modern British Columbia history.

For his role in negotiating the landmark Nisga'a Treaty, Nisga'a Tribal Council President Joseph Gosnell has been awarded the first honorary degree granted by Royal Roads University in Victoria.

Chief Gosnell received a Doctor of Laws, (Honoris Causa) , at a convocation ceremony held October 17, 1997. This is the text of his speech to the first graduating class of the new university.
