On August 4, 1998, Nisga'a Chief Joseph Gosnell made history when he initialed the Nisga'a Treaty along with British Columbia Premier Glen Clark and federal Minister of Indian Affairs Jane Stewart. The ceremony, witnessed by more than 2,000 people in the Nisga'a village of New Aiyansh, made headlines around the world because the treaty is the first in modern British Columbia history.
