November 16, 1998 - CFNR Launches NorthWestern British Columbia's First Internet Radio Broadcast (Netcast)

Monday Nov 16, 1998 - For immediate release

Northern Native Broadcasting, broadcasters of CFNR 92.1 FM Terrace, and Kermode Net Inc., Terrace's first full-service Internet provider, are pleased to announce the launch of CFNR Live on the NET.

Through the combined facilities of the two organizations, a CFNR audio feed has been broadcast to a select group of test listeners world-wide for the past two weeks. CFNR and Kermode.net are now extending the service into a 6 month public trial. Now anyone with a sufficiently powerful Pentium-class computer and an Internet connection of 28.8 or greater can listen to CFNR on the net, no matter where in the world they are.

To check out the audio feed, Internet users need only to set their browsers to:

www.kermode.net/nnb

As a special convenience Kermode Net Inc will also feature a link to the web site from the kermode.net home page.

www.kermode.net

If you want to check out the internet feed, just click on any sidebar drum on the CFNR First Nations radio website.

To provide some technical background, you as a listener need to have the following items:
- A pentium class or equivalent computer with 32MB RAM
- A sound card and speakers
- An Internet connection of 28.8 or higher
(people with 56K and up will get better results)
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 2
- Internet explorer or netscape versions 3.0 or higher

During the trial period, CFNR and Kermode.net will evaluate response and possibly consider broadening service to also provide a feed in the Real Audio format for users of older versions of real audio. We will also consider some other bandwidth options depending upon listener response, as well as possible increases in the number of streams.

Northern Native Broadcasting has been providing radio to Central and Northern BC since 1985 and now has an extensive network of repeaters serving 55 communities. NNB sees live audio on the Internet as a natural extension of its growth in services.

Kermode Net Inc., as the first full service Internet Provider in the Terrace/Kitimat/Nass corridor has been providing Web services to the region since July of 1995 when they helped Alcan start the sno.net homepage. Kermode Net now provides local dial services to communities stretching from Greenville through to Telkwa including the Kitwanga area which up until July 1998 had no local service.

Kermode Net sees this pilot project as a valuable demonstration of its capability to provide value-added Internet services to businesses. Kermode Net requests that listeners and viewers be patient as we torture test the audio feed over the next 6 months during our public trial.
