Success Stories

The 'Ksan Historical Village and Museum attracts 50,000 visitors annually.
'Ksan also houses the Kitanmax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art, the alma mater of
world famous First Nations artists such as Robert Davidson and Roy Henry Vickers.
'Ksan is in need of restoration and renovation. If it is allowed to deteriorate,
'Ksan could lose its strength as an anchor to the Hazelton economy. The Community
Economic Adjustment Initiative (CEAI) contribution: $249,075.
Benefits: the creation of 80 mostly local jobs over 10 months
in an area where unemployment is as high as 90 per cent; a substantial input of money to
the area which will spin off into other local spending; long-term jobs for 140 vendors
including 117 local First Nations artists; and continuing diversification of the Upper
Skeena economy out of fishing and forestry and towards tourism.
Gitxaat'in
Harbour Development, Laxgalts'ap, BC
Laxgalts'ap is a small, remote Nisga'a community located approximately 140 km
northwest of Terrace. An adequate and safe harbour facility will help Laxgalts'ap
take advantage of tourism traffic already coming to the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Beds by
building retail and tourism business. Many local businesses have said they are
willing to increase their activities, investment and employment in the area if the harbour
were made safe and functional. The project includes: raising 600 metres of access
road above flood levels, stabilizing the shore, capping the boat launch and the breakwater
with concrete, building a new float for small craft, building a 150 metre boardwalk and
market stalls for a fishermen's market, providing a level parking/storage area and
electrical service.
Benefits: This project will create 14 direct jobs for 10
weeks, two permanent full-time jobs and indirect employment for all commercial harbour
users. In 1998, 77 per cent of the Laxgalts'ap labour force was unemployed.
