Replace the Air Travellers Security Charge with something more fair

Honourable David Collenette
Minister of Transport
Room 104 - East Block
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario

Dear Minister Collenette:

Re: Air Travellers Security Charge

The Air Travellers Security Charge appears to discriminate against rural Canada. It is a high fee added onto a necessary service. For rural parts of Canada air travel is much more than a convenient, quick method of travel; it is a necessity. The prime example is that many northern residents must travel by air to metropolitan areas to have access to medical services. It is also unclear if listed airports in rural regions will see much improvement in security services despite users paying the same charge.

The charge also appears to discriminate against smaller, regional airlines. The security fee will be a significant addition to the price of a discount flight ticket on a short haul. It is also possible that the charge will be levied for each section of a longer trip that is comprised of flights with a number of different regional carriers. This will depend on how the travel agent prepares the ticket.

Northwest BC is a rural region of Canada. It is also served by local airlines that struggle to carve a niche for themselves in the marketplace. For these reasons, the Kitimat-Stikeine Regional District protests the present format for the Air Travellers Security Charge. We ask that the Ministry replace the current charge with a fairer alternative.

Yours truly

Mr. Harry Nyce
