Riverboat Days 2002: Salmon Barbeque, Terrace Nisga'a Dancers, and Canadian Canoe Exhibit

It was somewhat like a three ring circus. But that was just fine with the crowd.

Salmon Barbeque: Delightful. Terrace Nisga'a Dancers: Awesome. The Canadian Canoe Exhibit: Educational and intriguing.

A wonderful mix. A great afternoon.

The Terrace Nisga'a Dancers also performed during the Opening Ceremonies. Scheduling caused us to miss their park performance, so we captured them here.

The culturally correct name of the Terrace Nisga'a Dancers is Gitlaxdax Sayt K'ilim Goothl Nisga'a Cultural Dancers, which translates to Nisga'a Unified in Terrace.

The group was formed in January, 1997, and now boasts about 100 active members who are all from one of the four Nass Valley villages of Gingolx (Kincolith), Laxgalts'ap (Greenville), Gitwinksihlkw (Canyon City), and Gitlaxt'aamiks (Aiyansh).

The group offers traditional cultural dancing as well as contemporary dancing, and the primary focus is to teach their people living off reserve the skills and techniques of cultural dancing and singing.

The Terrace Nisga'a Dancers attended the First People's Festival in Victoria in August, 2001, and this year will participate in the First Annual International Aboriginal Festival which takes place in Vancouver from August 20 to September 1.

If you would like to make a donation to assist in their ongoing cultural representation of our commmunity, or get involved with the Terrace Nisga'a Dancers in some way, you can contact director/leader Keane Tait Stewart at (250) 615-4723. The fax number is (250) 615-4713 and his e-mail address is keane_79@hotmail.com.
